The simple answer
ChatGPT is an AI assistant that you can talk to in normal language.
You do not need to learn computer commands.
You can ask it a question, give it something to explain, ask it to help write something, compare choices, summarise a document or simply help you think through a problem.
Depending on the version and features available to you, ChatGPT can also search the web, work with files and images, and talk with you by voice.
But it can make mistakes.
Think of it as a very capable assistant that can help you work things out — not as someone who is automatically right.
Think of it like this
Imagine having a very fast assistant sitting beside you.
You can say:
- “Explain this letter to me.”
- “Help me write a polite reply.”
- “Compare these two options.”
- “What does this computer message mean?”
- “Give me a simple shopping list for these meals.”
The assistant responds immediately and you can keep asking follow-up questions.
The unusual part is that you do not have to learn a special way of speaking to it. You can simply explain what you need.
This is an analogy to help explain how it feels to use — ChatGPT is software, not a person.
What can I actually use ChatGPT for?
Here are six broad ways people use it.
1. Explain something
- “Explain what this electricity bill means.”
- “What is two-factor authentication?”
- “Explain this paragraph without the technical language.”
- “What does this warning on my computer mean?”
You can also say:
“Explain that more simply.”
or:
“Give me an example.”
2. Help me write
ChatGPT can help draft:
- an email
- a complaint
- a birthday message
- a polite reply
- a list
- a short letter
- wording you are struggling with
Example:
“Help me write a polite email asking a company why I was charged twice.”
You stay in control. ChatGPT can create a draft — read it over before you send it.
3. Summarise something
If you have a long piece of text or a supported document, ChatGPT can help pull out the main points.
- “Give me the five important points.”
- “What am I being asked to do?”
- “Explain this in plain English.”
Sensitive information deserves extra care before it is shared with any AI tool — a separate Voxcor Answer covers what to avoid putting into AI in more detail.
4. Help me think through something
ChatGPT can be useful when you are trying to organise your thoughts.
- “Give me the pros and cons of these two options.”
- “Help me make a checklist for this trip.”
- “What questions should I ask before buying this?”
- “I have these five jobs to do today. Help me put them in a sensible order.”
It can help you think through a decision. It does not need to make the decision for you.
5. Work with information
Where supported, ChatGPT can work with things you give it, such as:
- PDFs
- documents
- spreadsheets
- screenshots
- photographs
- charts
Possible requests:
- “Summarise this document.”
- “What does this screenshot mean?”
- “Explain this chart.”
- “Find the main differences between these two documents.”
Which of these features you have can vary by plan, device, account and settings.
6. Find current information
ChatGPT can search the web when current information is needed, such as:
- current news
- recent product information
- travel information
- changing rules or services
- current events
Where web search is used, ChatGPT can provide links or citations to sources.
Search results and AI summaries can still be wrong or incomplete. For important current information, open the source and check it.
Do I need to know special commands?
No.
You can speak to ChatGPT much the same way you would explain a problem to another person.
Instead of trying to invent the “perfect prompt”, you can write:
“I don’t understand this message. Please explain it simply.”
Then continue:
- “What does that second part mean?”
- “Give me an example.”
- “What should I check first?”
A conversation can improve the answer. You do not have to put everything into one perfect question.
Can I talk to ChatGPT instead of typing?
Yes, where Voice is available.
ChatGPT supports voice conversations on supported devices and accounts. You can speak naturally and hear the response.
This can be useful when:
- typing is inconvenient
- you want to talk through an idea
- you prefer listening to a response
- you want a more conversational experience
Features and voice options can vary by plan, device and settings.
Can ChatGPT look things up on the internet?
Yes.
ChatGPT can search the web for current information.
It may search automatically when a question needs up-to-date information, or Search can be selected manually where available.
When ChatGPT uses web search, the answer can include sources that you can open yourself.
For anything important, check the source — not just the AI summary.
Can I give ChatGPT a document, photo or screenshot?
Yes, where the feature is available.
For example, you might upload:
- a PDF
- a screenshot of an error
- a photograph of something you do not understand
- a document you want summarised
Then ask:
- “What am I looking at?”
- “Explain this simply.”
- “Summarise the important parts.”
- “Where is the setting I need?”
Uploading something is not automatically safe — a separate Voxcor Answer covers what information not to share with AI.
What is ChatGPT NOT good at?
It is not automatically correct.
It can misunderstand a question or produce information that sounds convincing but is wrong.
It does not replace professional judgement.
For matters such as medical treatment, legal decisions, major financial decisions or other high-stakes situations, use appropriate qualified sources.
It does not always know what has changed.
Current information should be searched and checked.
It cannot know things you never told it.
It may need more context before giving a useful answer.
It can sound more certain than it should.
A confident answer is not proof that the answer is correct.
Can ChatGPT be wrong?
Yes.
This is one of the most important things to understand about AI.
ChatGPT can give:
- an incorrect fact
- an outdated answer
- a misunderstood answer
- a source that does not support the claim
- an answer that sounds certain when it should not
For everyday low-risk tasks, that may simply mean correcting the conversation.
For important information, check it.
Is ChatGPT free?
ChatGPT has a free plan. Paid plans are also available with different features and usage limits.
Features, limits and plan details can change.
For current plan information, use the official ChatGPT/OpenAI pricing or account subscription information.
What should I try first?
Five safe starting points:
- Explain something — “Explain QR codes to me in simple language.”
- Write something — “Help me write a polite email cancelling an appointment.”
- Organise something — “Make me a simple packing checklist for a three-day trip.”
- Understand something — “I’m going to paste a paragraph. Tell me what it means in plain English.”
- Learn something — “Teach me how cloud storage works. Assume I know nothing about it.”
A simple first conversation
Example conversation
You
I keep hearing about QR codes. What exactly are they?
ChatGPT
A QR code is a square pattern that a phone camera can scan to open a link, without you typing a web address by hand. You’ll often see them on posters, receipts or menus.
You
Explain that more simply.
ChatGPT
It’s a shortcut. Point your camera at it, and it takes you straight to a website — no typing needed.
You
Are there any risks I should know about?
You can keep the conversation going for as long as you need.
How I use it
I’m 60 and I use AI every day — not because I want technology for the sake of technology.
I use it to research, understand unfamiliar subjects, compare information, work through problems, and draft and improve writing.
But I still check important answers.
— Majdi
The one thing to remember
- What is it?
- ChatGPT is an assistant you can talk to in normal language. Use it to understand, write, summarise, organise, compare and learn.
- How do I start?
- You do not need the perfect question. Start a conversation.
- What should I remember?
- Useful does not mean infallible. Check important information.
